Primary Research
When making a film the first thing the production company would need to do is research. Primary research is the best way find out about peoples interests and opinions. The company may conduct focus groups in which the audience would watch a part of the film and then would feedback their opinions on what they have seen. This means that the company can use those opinions and work them into the film.
Sometimes a questionnaire may be given out to the public so that they would recieve a wide range of opinions from a larger group of people from different enthnic and cutural background.
What questions could asked on a questionnaire?
- How old are you?
- Are you Male or Female?
- What is your favourite Genre of film?
- What is your favourite film at the moment?
- What attracts you to a film?
Secondary Research
Secondary Research is a good for production companies to find out about past films and ratings. This form of research gives companies more of an insight in to what competition they are up against and how not repeat past mistakes.
Quantitative Research
This is where researchers look in to information to do with figures and ratings. A researcher may want to find out the cost of props, locations, actors and equipment cost. A multi-choice survey may be given out to the public to find out quantitative infromation.
Qualitative Research
Qualitative Research is where researchers look for opinions and views on a certain subject. You can often find this information when using primary research techniques such as interviews and questionnaires. You can also find qualitative information from reviews and videos.
Audience Research
Similarly to what I mentioned before film companies sometimes ask the public to come in and watch a part of the film, they are then asked what they liked and what could be improved. Audience research can also be used to find out what they're target audience is interested in and how they can make their film better based on that information.
Market Research
Market research is research which finds out about the price of props, clothes, actors, equipment costs during pre-production. Market research can also be used along side audience research to find out how they can sell the film to the audience wether it be posters and other merchandise or advertisements and web banners.
